چکیده

A new type of biofilter packed with composite carriers was designed for tertiary denitrification of the secondary effluent with removal of both oxidized nitrogen and suspended solids (SS). At the empty bed residence time of 15 min and organic carbon to nitrate nitrogen (C/NO3-N) ratios of 2, 1.5 and 1 g/g, the removal percentage of NO3-N was 67%, 58% and 36% in the ethanol biofilter, and was 61%, 43% and 26% in the acetate biofilter, respectively. The biofilters packed with composite carriers removed SS effectively, with the effluent turbidity in both biofilters of less than 3 NTU. During the operating cycle between the biofilter backwashings, the NO3-N removal percentage decreased initially after backwashing, and then gradually increased. Under C/NO3-N ratios of 2, 1.5 and 1 g/g, the NO3-N reduction rate was 1.75, 1.04 and 0.68 g/m/d in the ethanol biofilter, and was 1.56, 1.07 and 0.76 g/m/d in the acetate biofilter, respectively. In addition, during denitrification, the ratio of the consumed chemical oxygen demand to the removed NO3-N was 5.06-8.23 g/g in the ethanol biofilter, and was 4.26-8.6 g/g in the acetate biofilter.

Tertiary Denitrification of the Secondary Effluent by Denitrifying Biofilters Packed with Different Sizes of

Tertiary denitrification of the secondary effluent in wastewater treatment plants is necessary to control the eutrophication of receiving water bodies. Two denitrifying biofilters (DNBF), one packed with quart sand with sizes of 2–4 mm (DNBFS) and the other of 4–6 mm (DNBFL), were operated for tertiary denitrification under empty bed retention times (EBRTs) of 30 min, 15 min and 7.5 min, respec...

Comparison of ethanol, methanol and succinate effects as carbon sources on effluent biological denitrification

Abstract Background: Increase of nitrate concentration in water sources is becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world. Nitrogen containing compounds released into environment can create serious problems, such as eutrophication of water sources and hazard potential to human health, because it has potency of causing methemoglubinemia disease and cancer. Between recommended methods, bi...

Effect of Dissolved Oxygen and Chemical Oxygen Demand to Nitrogen Ratios on the Partial Nitrification/Denitrification Process in Moving bed Biofilm Reactors

Partial nitrification was reported to be technically feasible and economically favorable, especially for wastewaterwith high ammonium concentration or low C/N ratio. In this study, the effect of dissolved oxygen (DO)and influent ratio of chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD/N) ratio on biological nitrogen removal fromsynthetic wastewater was investigated. Experiments were c...

Surveying Denitrification Efficacy in Up-Flow Packed Bed Bioreactor Operated under Heterotrophic Condition Using Autotrophic Bacteria

Introduction: The biological denitrification process is an interesting cost-effective technique to remove nitrate from water supplies. Acetic acid can be used as a carbon source in this process, but its consumption rate is a critical issue and, in some cases, it is quite different from stoichiometric constants. The current study aimed to investigate the nitrate removal in an up-flow packed bed ...

Effects of residual organics in municipal wastewater on hydrogenotrophic denitrifying microbial communities.

Hydrogenotrophic denitrification is promising for tertiary nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater. To reveal the influence of residual organics in municipal wastewater on hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers, we adopted high-throughput 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing to examine microbial communities in hydrogenotrophic denitrification enrichments. Using effluent from a municipal wastewater treat...
